Manaiaklani Film Festival

Manaiakalani Film Festival Review: 5 Years

Remember when you were 5 years old? That feeling you got when you first started school. The Pt England Extension students created a movie that shows flashbacks from the past. The movie explains what it was like to be 5 years old again. Of course we all were five years old once. The message that goes with the movie shows pupils the stages of growing up. The movie would be perfect for anyone to watch at any age due to the movie being educational and inspirational at the same time.

The movie camera angles were up to good standards, with the lighting being a bit off with the weather being a bit cloudy, but the movie was still good at explaining the elements of being a five year old and growing up as a young teenager and processing as an adult.

Manaiakalani Ambassador

Today I had a cool and fun experience at the Auckland Aotea Centre being the Manaiakalani Ambassador for my school. I was surrounded by 10 other people from the Manaiakalani community who were from different schools. The different schools had one person representing their school and talking about one example of their learning in detail. The people I was with was Joshua,Serenity,Paige,Marcus,Sophie-isabella,Zeda,Sebaan,Shanelle,Levi,and Ingrid. We got to speak in front of many people about what we did in our school for term 2, they were people really funny and cool to interact with. It was the most fun getting to know new people from different school and getting along.

We also went to talk to google to talk to teach them about what we do at our school also. When we left they we kind enough to give us a swag bag with their newest google cardboard, a book, pen and a sticker which is on my netbook right at this moment.

Mr Burt said that we were staying there until morning tea, and they also give us  some sandwiches, fruit, and $8.00 worth of sparking water. Because I felt like I was boss I took a photo of it and so did the other ambassadors.
Hope you enjoy.

Hiki The Kiwi-Fish for the Future

Image result for hiwi the kiwiHiki The Kiwi come to our school to teach us about looking after the fish for the younger generation. The fish from New Zealand  are slowly getting extinct from people fishing and keeping a bad sized fish instead of throwing it back into the water. If you catch a snapper the legal size has to be 28cm long for the legal minimum size. Mr and Mrs Minstrel taught and sang us many songs about fishing.

Song:
Kai Moana Food from the sea
Kai Moana to feed a family
Fish for the future and there will always be
More Kai Moana for you and me.

We first had to read our books that were online and then answer all the questions, we also made a voice over explaining what muscle fatigue is. We also made a Venn Diagram to support what was the same with both stories and what was different. hope you enjoy.

Saia and Gabriel

Gabriel and Saia came to our school once again to talk about their experiences that they had when they went to Silicon Valley in America. Gabriel and Saia had an opportunity to go Silicon Valley in America and visit many famous places, such as Google,Facebook,IDEO,StanFord University,XERO,Microsoft,Apple,Khan Academy, and many more. They said in a few years time we would be in their position that they are in today.

Saia said that his favorite places to go was StanFord University because he really like how he got to see what it was like to be there. Gabriel’s favorite places to go was Microsoft, they both got to test what the Xbox 2 slim was like and also got the use special glasses that can let you play and kill things just like a game but better. Saia and Gabriel inspired us to be where they were in a few years time.

I was inspired to do what they were doing, so my goal to do is to Work Hard, Dream Big and hope that good things will come my way.

Our People

elizabeth's new Term 2 movie from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.
Our focus in the Senior school for Term 2  was looking at our waka and the significance of the journeys that our ancestors made and then what that means for us today.
As part of our learning we first found out about the Waka of the House that we belong to. At Pt England each of our Houses have been named after some of the more memorable Waka and we started by looking at the purpose of waka, why the waka were important to the Pacific peoples and  the features of them.

We then moved on to looking at the resources they would take with them to sustain them on their journey. What an amazing undertaking!!
We then had to Create an animation that would show what our waka meant to us and what we learned about the navigators and voyagers. Learning about this was a whole new experience, My family of course  is a really important part of my life, and learning about this brought me closer and made me think more carefully about  my heritage and culture.

We had a  Rubric with criteria which  helped to guide and focus our thinking around  what we needed to create. I created my images using Hyperstudio and put them into  iMovie… I also created this short movie which explains the elements of my Animation and shares our learning from this.

40 Hour Famine

Children in Syria are having to leave their homes because of many bad things that have happened to their families and their homes. So this year I am participating in the 40 hour famine for the first time, as my first time being in the 40 hour famine sleep-over it has been a pretty fun experience doing it with my friends.

Because I am 12 years old I can only do the 20 hours because I am too young to do 40 hours. In the 20 hour famine the only thing you can eat is a lolly called barley sugars, You can also bring some water and some juice. Though out the term we are able to fundraise and make tons of money, so the money we raise will go towards the children in Syria and help them go to school and also have some food to eat.

Memorise

Everyday I walk out the door of my home and still think to myself where to go, But everyday I still think about my family and my home. My imagination is hard to capture while my memories still haunt me constantly. Many things in my life have changed but suddenly now I can see clearly. My older brothers have been a huge part in my life teaching me all the basics in life. My Parents have always stood beside me whenever i'm alone.

In life I still try to find out if I’m here for better or for worse, my life will still carry on and proceed my progress into life. Everyday I think for what I shall be for when I grow up. I don’t really know what my success will be in the future but for now I shall stay in the present.

My Culture will always be a big part in my life that I will never forget. The food, dancing, singing, laughter and family is something I will keep treasured in my heart forever. The times we went to the Cook Islands would be most likely the best and the most hardest thing I have ever done,  reason being because the best thing was going back to my second home again and the hard part was saying GoodBye.

The Gathers

This is the book and it is called the Gathers. Hope you enjoy

Lava Narrative

Image result for lava movieA long long time ago, as if we were in the days of the dinosaurs lived two proud maunga above and below the pristine pacific ocean. These two maunga were deeply in love as if they we ranginui. The sky father and papatuanuku the earth mother. However, Maungarei, stood tall above the sea as if he was Sir Edmund Hillary and Rangitoto below the deep blue sky as if she was the earth core

It wasn’t all happy joy because these two lovebirds were separated by liters and liters of pacific ocean and could not see each other as if they were blinded by love. Maungarei and Rangitoto could not see each other but still communicated through song as if they while big blue whales.

Image result for lava movie gifsEveryday she would hear his tune but she can’t see him, It was like they were a magnet that can’t see each other, But  As they wait for that one day to meet  they shall still sing their  songs and communicated through it. One day we would meet Maunga to Muanga but when her tane heard her sing his song for the first time it makes his heart melt like how he lava’s her,

While he heard Rangitoto sing, Maungarei had an earthquake that brought them to together. Both of their dreams came true to meet each other, they both had a wild ride, but they both lava each other.

Paper Maceh

Today we made some paper macehs with Miss Berry. Instead of making Paper maceh we made it with balloons and string. Miss Berry told us to cover the string in glue and put it on the balloon. The glue we covered the string with was PVA glue, When the string was covered we wrapped it around the balloon and kept going until we thought it was done. We hang it outside and let it dry, when it's dry we can pop it and eat our lolly that was inside

I Lumimate

we had some very special guests come to Pt England, they were called I Luminate. I Luminate is a dance group that is from Usa, and they are not a normal type of dance group. This dance group dances with l e d lights attached to their custom. That custom they wear has to be all black, While dancing there's one person who is controlling the lights on their custom.

On Tuesday three people from I Luminate came to our school and danced for us. We were all amazed of what they did for us, I thought that they were very talented and were the best dances I ever saw. When they were done they come out and did the New Zealand Haka, It was really funny how they did the New Zealand haka because it was their first time doing it. When everyone left Mrs Tele’a said “Okay everyone it’s not over yet the year 7&8’s get to ask the I Luminate crew questions”. Sadly I didn’t get to ask a question but all the questions that were asked were really funny and entertaining.

After all that they had to leave and go to the next place they had to perform too. It was a really fun seeing them dance and making my laugh sometimes.

Year 8 Camp Highlight

Last Term the year 8’s went to Marsden Point for our leadership camp. Going to Marsden Point taught us more leaderships skills that we knew so we took those skills into action, by looking after the little kids and working together as a team. We also had some cool activity also.

The Activities were Push play, fire pit,Waterside,flying-fox,Angel Art,Archery,Kayaking, But all of the groups could only do four activities each. My team was called North Beach and our first activity was Angel art. At Angel Art we got to relax and draw some photos that would be showed at school. My drawing was drawing that is most important to me. I really enjoyed Angel art because we got to relax and draw.

Our next activity was Waterside, Waterside was my favourite activity to do. At Marsden point they have a very long and fun to slide on. On the waterside we had to make ourselves slippery so we could go faster while we're sliding down the slide.

Archery was next and it was with Mr Wiseman, when we are shooting our arrows we have to make sure no one is near the target while we shoot, Mr Wiseman said that we had to wear a something on our arm just in case when we shoot the for the target the bow string or the puller would not hurt our risk.

Our last activity was the fire pit with Miss Flavaelle, The fire pit is just baking and we baked chocolate chip cookies. Miss Flavaelle said if we wanted to play with the pool table but we played with it after we baked the cookies. But then we were all too tired to play pool so we just sat and  had a few talks and a few naps.

It was now 4 o'clock and Mrs Tele’a asked if we could do the make up activity, Which meant if we wanted to do an activity we haven’t already done. So I went to the flying fox, the flying fox was really fun to go on because it was a nice view from afar.  Mr J said it’s easier to put your foot at the end of the wood put I just jumped off. I was going extremely fast I even hit the end, but while I was coming down I felt like I was flying like a bird.
